Chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs) have become the heaviest burden to healthcare systems worldwide [1,2,3]. About 41 million people die of CNCDs each year, accounting for 71% of all global deaths [4]. While CNCDs are traditionally thought to be more prevalent in developed countries, the majority of the increase in these diseases globally is occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) [5]. Out of the 41 million deaths which are attributable to CNCDs each year, 85% are in LMICs [4]. The CNCD burden is particularly problematic for sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) since CNCDs are already a major cause of mortality in the sub-region
